# API Status

If the API is not responding as expected, this page helps you tell an API outage apart from an issue in your own request:

## Rule out your own request

If the status page shows no incident, confirm the problem is not on your side.

  <Step title="Confirm the API responds">
    This returns the latest Ethereum block number. Replace `YourApiKey` and call the endpoint:

    ```
    https://api.etherscan.io/v2/api?chainid=1&module=proxy&action=eth_blockNumber&apikey=YourApiKey
    ```

    A `result` with a block number (in hex) means the API is up and your key is valid. An error under `result` points to your request or key. See [Common error messages](/common-error-messages).

    Confirm you are within your daily quota with the `getapilimit` endpoint:

    ```
    https://api.etherscan.io/v2/api?module=getapilimit&action=getapilimit&apikey=YourApiKey
    ```

    The response shows the calls allowed and used for the day, so you can tell a rate-limit block from a service issue.
